Community Impact Week, United Way of the Columbia-Willamette, powered by Hands On Greater Portland

Community Impact Week will feature volunteer opportunities throughout Clark, Clackamas, Multnomah and Washington counties! This event will highlight our Community Impact work of United Way of the Columbia-Willamette, which includes volunteer opportunities supporting early education, disaster & crisis resiliency, stable housing, and racial justice initiatives, among many other ways you can support needs in our community. Join us on one day or many days! Revisit volunteer projects you missed or connect with something new! Community Impact Week is a great way to re-engage in volunteerism, support our community partners, and have a lot of fun along the way.

Want to find some other ways to help or can't attend one of the volunteer projects? Host a community supply drive! Scroll to the bottom to learn how you can host a supply drive for community partners with important needs.

Thank you to our generous sponsors for supporting Community Impact Week!

Blanchet House

Make Care Kits For People Who Are Experiencing Homelessness

The misson of Blanchet House is to offer food, shelter, and aid to all those in need of a safe place to be nourished and restored. Assist the transformation of each life we touch with compassion and dignity.

Supplies Needed: Care kits include basic items that many Blanchet House guests need everyday. When you give care kits, you are showing kindness and compassion for a fellow human being going through difficult times and enduring cruel living conditions. Commonly, they include a small article of clothing, some hygiene supplies, and a snack, packed in a sealed bag. For ideas and directions on how to make a care kit, please see our website: https://blanchethouse.org/care-kits/

Please do not include literature, medications like Tylenol or Advil, or liquid hand sanitizer. Do not pack care kits in paper bags. We ask that you only include new items in care kits.

Who Benefits: Blanchet House distributes care kits to guests that join us for our meal services. Blanchet House serves over 6000 plates of food each week (over 1000 each day) and can hand out over 200 care kits during a meal service.

Drop off Contact and Support: Care kits can be dropped off Mon-Sat, at 310 NW Glisan St. from 8:00 – 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 – 4 p.m. Please avoid dropping off during meal services when our staff is occupied.

Pull up to the entrance on Glisan, leave your items in the car, knock on the door to get our attention, and a staff member will retrieve your donation. If you’d like a donation receipt, we will provide one. You can also call us at 503-241-4340 or email hjanowski@blanchethouse.org.

Fort Vancouver Regional Library

Cards of Encouragement From Your Library Friends

Our Mission
To strengthen our communities through knowledge, experiences, and creativity.

Our Vision
Everyone in our communities is valued and empowered to succeed.

Our Values
We bring these principles to our work with our communities, our partners, and our colleagues:

Supplies Needed:

-Choose whatever paper you have at home (construction, card stock, copier/printer/notebook paper, or you can even cut up a paper grocery sack & use the non-printed part to make your card or repurpose wrapping paper or old greeting cards by cutting off the personal message sent to you and reusing the non-used greeting side). If you need a template, we can send a few diecuts (shapes & cut outs) or sheets of paper with a couple markers if needed (email volunteer@fvrl.org).

-To design the cards, you can use pens (black & white can be very stunning or penciled drawings), colored pencils, markers, paints (just be sure they are dried out prior to mailing), and crayons for your message. You can glue on embellishments or items cut from old magazines or cereal boxes or buttons from a sewing basket or stickers you haven’t used (just look around for design inspiration). Some volunteers have even dried out flowers, used origami designs, watercolors, and so forth. Use your own creativity!

-We encourage you to sign the card "your library friend" since that will make it a bit more personal. Most seniors have used the library and know they are among friends when they have visited. This will make them feel special knowing that part of their world is thinking of them.

-Envelopes are NOT needed for any cards.

Ideas for Messages in the Cards:
We think of you often!, You are special!, Thanks for the kindness you have shown others!, You are never forgotten!, We remember our friends!, Thanks for all you have done for others!, Hope you have a wonderful day!, May your day be filled with sunshine!

-You can make as many cards as you wish. The more cards we have then the more that we can give out.

Cards can be any size as long as they fit in a standard 8 x 10 large gold mailing envelope. Half sheets, full sheets, quarter sheets, folded or not, etc.... are all welcome.... please use your best creative skills. We will take pictures of some of the cards and share on library social media too (FVRL Volunteer Facebook Page & more) and also some of the feedback from senior centers. Watch for your creativity to be front and center so you can share with your friends on your page.

Also if you could include (on a separate piece of paper) your name, email & how much time you spent making the cards, which library location you visit most often normally and then we'll include with our volunteer stats and share at the next Volunteer Appreciation Reception too. You can email us pictures of you making the cards if you wish (email photos to: volunteer@fvrl.org or the address below) for us to share at next year's reception.

These cards can be sent to:
FVRL
Attention: Volunteer Services
2018 Grand Blvd
Vancouver, WA 98661

Or can be dropped off at the same office, please schedule a time in advance (office is locked & has limited open hours) by emailing volunteer@fvrl.org

Or drop by any FVRL library book drop in a large envelope and with Attention: Sherry B (volunteer services) written on it.

Thank YOU SO MUCH for making time to share some cheer with those that have not been able to have visitors for months and often find technology challenging. They may feel forgotten and lonely so your card may bring more hope and joy than you could ever imagine.
