Help a Person Living With ALS in Your Community! (age 18+) Referral

Give back to your community on a schedule that works for you! ALS Northwest's Helping Hands Volunteer Program matches volunteers with people living with ALS in their communities for help with things like errands, household chores, yard work, hobbies and companionship. We have several open opportunities with varying schedules across the greater Portland area.

Helping Hands volunteers are matched with a person living with ALS in their area and lend a hand with tasks like household chores, meal preparation, errands, yard work, companionship, and more.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own talents and interests to this program and give back on a schedule that works for them. Do you have a particular skill that you’d like to offer? Please let us know!

Open opportunities in the Portland area include assisting with:

- Yard work/gardening
- Household chores
- Running errands
- Meal preparation
- Laundry
- Home organizing
- Correspondence (helping a person send emails, texts, make phone calls, or write letters)
- Companionship (relationship building)

The mission of ALS Northwest is to provide comprehensive support and advocacy for people with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and their families, while advancing research for new treatments and an end to ALS. ALS is a terminal neurodegenerative disease with no cure. The average prognosis from diagnosis is 2-5 years. Everyone's journey with ALS is different, but eventually people with ALS lose the ability to walk, talk, speak, and finally breathe. The impact of an ALS diagnosis is immense, and everyday tasks like laundry or yard work become much harder. That’s where our Helping Hands volunteers come in. Volunteering is an incredibly rewarding way to connect with your local ALS community. One of our Helping Hands volunteers shared, “Volunteering with people with ALS changes your mindset, making you more present and grateful for what you have.”
