Ensuring S’mores at Girl Scout Camp Mountaindale (age 15+) *Impact Week*
Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Girl Scouts in Kindergarten-12th grade engage in Girl Scout-led, age-progressive activities enabling them to discover their values, skills, and the world around them; connect with others in an inclusive environment; and take action to make a difference in their world. We focus on four priority areas: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), Life Skills, Outdoor Leadership, and Entrepreneurship. The Girl Scout Research Institute’s Girl Scouts Soar in the Outdoors Report found that eight in ten girls say that Girl Scouting allows them to do outdoor activities they have never done before and wouldn’t have done otherwise. These experiences go beyond just providing fun. Girls also say that doing outdoor activities through Girl Scouts helps them learn about the outdoors and nature, teaches them how to take care of the environment, and helps them overcome a fear in the outdoors!
Volunteers will receive a tour of the camp, and a brief orientation on the restoration project for the day. We will be removing the deteriorating wooden benches and the concrete footings at the Camp Mountaindale Campfire area in preparation for the installation of new durable outside seating for 200 that is more sustainable outdoors year-round in the elements
Annually more than 2,000 Girl Scouts attend programming at Camp Mountaindale and highlights include gathering at campfire, roasting marshmallows, and enjoying s'mores.
Volunteers are asked to wear close-toed shoes, dress for the weather and bring work gloves and a water bottle. Water bottles can be refilled on-site. Restrooms are available inside the main lodge. Volunteers are welcome to bring a sack lunch to enjoy inside the lodge or outside in the meadow area after we complete the bench removal project. Mask are optional.
Location is located off Sunset Highway in North Plains, Oregon. (Driving Directions to Camp Mountaindale are not posted on the web for security reasons - details directions can be provided to all participating volunteers.) Ample parking is available near the main lodge.
