Help Restore the Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge Wetlands! (age 1+) *MLK 2014*
Join us in honoring the legacy of Dr. King through meaningful service to our community: "Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve."
Spend this national day of service planting trees at Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge! We will plant native cottonwood and ash trees in critical riparian habitat on the River S Unit.
Ridgefield NWR has over 5,000 acres of marshes, grasslands and woodlands. The Refuge was established to secure crucial winter habitat for Dusky Canada geese and other migrating birds, such as sandhill cranes and tundra swans. We will be working on Deer Ridge, a part of the Refuge that is not accessible to the general public, so it will be a great chance to volunteer while catching glimpses of local wildlife. Hot drinks and snacks will be provided. All volunteers must sign a Volunteer Service Agreement (linked under "Project Requirements" below) and bring it to the project. Our events go on rain or shine, so wear waterproof shoes and dress for the weather! All work days are from 9AM-12:30PM.
How to get to the refuge:
To get to the River S Unit part of the refuge: Go west 2.5 miles to Hillhurst (9th) Ave, left for 3/4 mile to River S. Unit en-trance, down hill across bridge to kiosk parking lot. We will meet at River S kiosk then carpool to drive approximately 1.5 miles down a gravel road to the planting site. Participants must arrive on time in order to follow carpool leader.
Project Requirements:
-
Volunteers of any age can attend this project; any volunteer under age 18 must attend with a parent or adult chaperone.
-
All volunteers are required to sign an MLK Volunteer Waiver (print it now, fill it out, and bring it with you to save time during project check in). Volunteers under 18 are required to bring a waiver signed by their parent or legal guardian.
-
If you plan to bring children/additional volunteers you MUST reserve slots for them. The best way to do this is to create a Volunteer Team, then sign up your team for this project. Questions? Email teams@handsonportland.org
