TeamWorks: Northeast Portland Sampler! (age 16+) *Hands On*
TeamWorks offers volunteers the opportunity to make a slightly longer-term commitment to volunteering, delve into a topic or issue-area, and get to know other volunteers in the process.
This unique "sampler" team will focus its attention on the NE Portland region to better understand this part of our city through the eyes of the nonprofits that serve its communities. We’ll sort food for hungry families at the Oregon Food Bank, plant trees with Friends of Trees, promote literacy by mending books at the Children's Book Bank, help weatherize homes with the Community Engergy project, and engage in a discussion of the history of Northeast Portland over dinner!
Whether you live in Northeast Portland and want to delve into your neighborhood, or live in another area and hope to learn more about the NE quadrant, please join us! It's a great mix of projects and should be a lot of fun.
What is TeamWorks? TeamWorks teams consist of approximately 10-15 individuals, led by a Hands On trained volunteer leader, who commit to volunteering for every project in the series, so please carefully check the schedule below before signing up! Signing up for the FIRST session will sign you up for the entire TeamWorks. If you know in advance you'd have to miss one of the projects, let us know and you might still be eligible to join the team. Questions can be directed to Melia Tichenor, melia@handsonportland.org or 503.200.3370.
TeamWorks Schedule:
Saturday, January 14th: Stock the Pantry at the Oregon Food Bank for MLK Weekend of Service
9:00am-12:30pm
Oregon Food Bank
Kick off the TeamWorks experience over United Way's MLK Weekend of Service, as we help Oregon Food Bank meet their mission to eliminate hunger and its root causes. Unpack and sort donated food destined for agencies that directly serve low income people in Oregon. Your presence makes a huge difference, and it's a lot of fun! Please wear closed-toed, closed-heeled shoes, and clothing you wouldn't mind getting just a little dirty. Once the shift wraps up at the food bank, we'll head over the McMenamin's Kennedy School to get to know each other over lunch at the Courtyard Restaurant (please note, lunch will not be covered by Hands On, so remember your wallet!).
Saturday, January 21st: Planting with Friends of Trees
9:00am-1:00pm
I-205 Path at NE Sandy Blvd
Friends of Trees restores green spaces and natural areas in the Portland metro region by planting native trees, plants and shrubs. We'll help improve wildlife habitat, improve water quality and beautify NE Portland by planting with trees along the I-205 path! Friends of Trees will provide gloves, tools, skilled guidance - as well as free coffee and breakfast treats. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy shoes.
Wednesday, January 25th: Get Books to Children at the Chidren's Book Bank
6:30-8:30pm
Children's Book Bank
For children in poverty, one of the biggest obstacles to literacy development (which begins at birth) is the scarcity of books in the home. While the ratio of books to children in middle-income neighborhoods is approximately 13 books to 1 child, the ratio in low-income neighborhoods is a mere 1 book to 300 children. The Children’s Book Bank narrows the book gap by providing the community with a place for families donate the books their children have outgrown, moving thousands and thousands of children’s books into the homes of kids in need. We'll lend a hand by sprucing up community-donated books, which will later be distributed to low-income preschool children in the Portland area! Every gently-used donated book is inspected and cleaned by volunteers. Tasks include wiping covers, taping torn pages, erasing scribbles, covering inscriptions, and reinforcing worn spines. Feel free to bring some gently-loved children's books to donate when you come.
Wednesday, February 1st: Northeast Portland History - Dinner and Discussion
6:30-8:00pm
TBD NE Portland Restaurant
We'll meet up for dinner at a local area restaurant to discuss aspects of Northeast Portland's rich (and devisive) history, as well as current issues, highlights, and community initiatives in the area. Each team member will bring an interesting article, fact, or historical story to share based on themes handed out the week before.
Saturday, February 4th: Weatherize Homes with the Community Engergy Project
8:45am-2:00pm
Community Energy Project & Residential Homes
Community Energy Project, Inc., empowers people in the Portland metro area to maintain healthier, more livable homes, control their utility costs, and conserve natural resources. We'll be participating in "on the ground" work and taking pride in helping seniors and people with disabilities weatherize their homes for the winter season! Using simple draft stopping and energy saving materials such as silicone-acrylic and rope caulk, interior vinyl storm windows, and door weatherstripping, individuals and teams of volunteers weatherize the homes of seniors and people with disabilities. We'll receive on site training by CEP staff and then disperse in carpools to go work on residential homes within CEP's service area. After the project, we will reconvene back at the CEP's office to reflect upon and discuss our day's experience and the overall TeamWorks experience over a brown bag lunch. Please remember to bring a bag lunch!
