Care for the Trees at Hoyt Arboretum (age 6+)*Impact Week 2022*

Hoyt Arboretum is Portland, Oregon’s living museum of trees. Located in Washington Park, the Arboretum encompasses 189 ridge-top acres accessible by 12 miles of trails. To the local community, Hoyt Arboretum represents a unique setting for education, fitness, and reflection. To the world, Hoyt Arboretum is a critical partner in global tree conservation and scientific research. Hoyt Arboretum relies on the support of Hoyt Arboretum Friends, a membership-based nonprofit organization working in partnership with Portland Parks & Recreation.
Care for Hoyt Arboretum’s trees and trails with a variety of hands-on stewardship projects. Projects vary for each crew depending on the needs of the season, but often include invasive species removal, weeding and mulching, trail maintenance, and more. With 189-acres and more than 6,000 trees along 12 miles of trails, volunteers are incredibly important to maintaining Hoyt Arboretum’s tree collection and trail system, and it’s a unique opportunity for volunteers to learn about and care for rare and unusual trees and plants from around the world.
This is an outdoor volunteer opportunity and will occur rain or shine. Volunteers should dress for the weather and be prepared to get a little dirty. Long pants and sturdy, closed-toe shoes are necessary. Please bring water, snacks, and any other personal supplies you need. Gloves and tools are provided. Face masks are not required outdoors in Portland parks but are encouraged when inside city buildings. Please stay safe and stay home if you are feeling any COVID-19 symptoms.
Volunteers can park in the large or small parking lots by the Visitor Center (4000 SW Fairview Blvd). Parking passes will be provided for the pay-to-park lots. Parking is limited, so carpooling is encouraged. Hoyt Arboretum is also accessible via the Red or Blue MAX lines to the Washington Park station followed by a 10-minute walk via the Overlook Trail.

Project Requirements:

  • Volunteers must be 6 years of age or older to attend this project; any volunteer under age 16 must attend with a parent or adult chaperone.
