Socialize with Cats & Dogs (age 12+) *MLK Weekend 2019*
Join us in honoring the legacy of Dr. King through meaningful service to our community: "Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve."
-- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
About:
For 149 years OHS has been sheltering abandoned animals, fighting cruelty and neglect, and working to build a caring, compassionate community here in Oregon. The pets at OHS rely entirely on your donations for food, shelter, and medical care. We appreciate your support!
Project Description:
Your visit will include a presentation about OHS and animal handling safety followed by a shelter tour. You will then spend time socializing dogs and cats. Please note that some of our time will be spent outside regardless of weather conditions. Your volunteer session will help us give the animals the attention they crave and help them develop the social skills they need to find new homes.
Important Info:
Please leave valuables at home or locked in the trunk of your car. Unfortunately, we do not have a secure location to store valuables.
Parking Instructions:
You may park in our main lot, but please park off to the side to give our potential adopters the close-up parking.
What to Wear?
Dress Code:
• long pants (no capris, shorts, skirts or cropped pants)
• non-slip, closed toed shoes (tennis shoes, boots, etc.)
• Jacket or coat for outdoor sessions
• Hanging jewelry is not allowed and facial piercing must be removed or covered with a band-aid.
Required Forms:
Adult: Every adult participant (18 or older) will be asked to sign a waiver release form.
Youth 12-17: Youth participants must complete the “Youth Group Volunteer Waiver Form” ahead of time and bring it with them to the shelter. Copy and paste the following link to download it:

-
You must be 12 years of age or older to attend this project; any volunteer under age 16 must attend with a parent or adult chaperone.
-
All volunteers under 18 are required to bring a Youth Volunteer Release Form signed by their parent or legal guardian. Please download, complete, and bring this waiver with you on the day of the project.
-
If you plan to bring children/additional volunteers you MUST reserve slots for them. The best way to do this is to create a Volunteer Team, then sign up your team for this project. Questions? Email teams@handsonportland.org
-
Team Captains are only able to reserve up to 50% of the spots on any individual MLK Weekend of Service Project. Team Captains are required to provide names and email addresses for each team member (over the age of 13) in order to hold spaces on a volunteer project or they may be removed from the project. Questions? Email teams@handsonportland.org
IMPORTANT NOTE: You are responsible for ensuring that everyone signed up through your team attends - only sign up team members who have confirmed their availability. Teams that repeatedly sign up, but do not show up or show up with fewer volunteers than they signed up, may be removed. To add or remove team members from a project: log in to your volunteer account and click "Manage My Team" next to the appropriate upcoming opportunity.
