Opportunity Details

Schoolhouse Supplies Spectacular (age 12+) *Stand Together Week*

During this project, volunteers will assist with sorting, counting and organizing donated supplies, as well as stocking the shelves of the Free Store for Teachers. We may have some other projects in support of the Free Store for Teachers as well. We’ll start off with a brief orientation of our organization and a tour of our facilities. We will start cleaning up before the end of your shift and leave a little time for reflection on what you accomplished (which will be a lot!). The learning and classroom tools you process will be in classrooms just days after you process them!

About Schoolhouse Supplies:
Schoolhouse Supplies provides free school supplies to students in need. We believe that every child deserves school supplies and has the right to a quality education. We envision a world where the opportunity gap is closed for low income students and children of color - a world where every child has the tools they need to succeed. Schoolhouse Supplies operates Oregon's only Free Store for Teachers, the Tools for Schools backpack program, and Schoolhouse Supplies Online.

What to Bring/Wear?
Please wear comfortable non-skid, close-toed shoes as you will be in a warehouse environment. I also recommend wearing comfortable clothes that are easy to move around in. Clothing occasionally gets dirty while sorting supplies. We encourage you to bring your reusable water bottle for our water dispenser.

Note:
We are located on the Madison High School Campus on 2735 NE 82nd Ave. WE ARE NOT LOCATED AT THE MAIN PARKING LOT AND SCHOOL ENTRANCE, but rather in the lower parking lot behind the sports field bleachers. Just look for our big green sign on 82nd. You can park in that lot and head through our red door.

All volunteers under the age of 16 must attend with a parent/chaperone.

Stand Together Week is the Portland Timbers, Thorns FC, and T2 citywide volunteer initiative that brings the community together to support local nonprofit organizations. The week engages hundreds of supporters, including Timbers, Thorns FC, & T2 players, coaches, ambassadors and front office staff who work with various non-profits in the community. Since 2012, Stand Together Week participants have donated 15,371 hours of service at over 193 projects focused on benefitting youth and the environment.

Project Requirements:

  • All volunteers under 18 are required to bring a Hands On Youth Waiver signed by their parent or legal guardian.  (print it now, fill it out, and bring it with you to save time during project check in).

  • If you plan to bring children/additional volunteers you MUST reserve slots for them. The best way to do this is to create a Volunteer Team, then sign up your team for this project. Questions? Email teams@handsonportland.org

IMPORTANT NOTE: You are responsible for ensuring that everyone signed up through your team attends - only sign up team members who have confirmed their availability. Teams that repeatedly sign up, but do not show up or show up with fewer volunteers than they signed up, may be removed. To add or remove team members from a project: log in to your volunteer account and click "Manage My Team" next to the appropriate upcoming opportunity.
