| Severe Weather Shelter Volunteer |
Agency: Good Neighbor Center
Description:
In response to the limited number of beds in the Washington County overnight homeless shelters, the Severe Weather Shelter Response Plan for Homeless Persons was developed by a committee of concerned individuals from the faith based community, social service sector and Washington County emergency management.
The goal of the plan is to provide temporary shelter to homeless persons when there is a period of prolonged weather severe cold and hot temperatures (life-threatening). Severe temperatures are defined as two or more days where temperature reach 32 degrees or less or reach 98 degrees or more.
Currently, your help is needed to staff the overnight shelters on nights when the weather drops below freezing. The shelters will open at 7 p.m. and close at 7 a.m. Volunteers will work directly with the Shelter Staffing Coordinator and will supervise intake of homeless folks, help prepare and provide a light supper, oversee the evening and provide a light breakfast in the morning.
