Spruce Up the OHS Dog Walking Path (age 12+) *STW 2015*

Thanks for deciding to volunteer at the Oregon Humane Society! For 146 years, OHS has been sheltering abandoned animals, fighting cruelty and neglect, and working to build a caring, compassionate community here in Oregon. The pets at OHS rely entirely on your donations for food, shelter, and medical care. We appreciate your support!

Volunteer Activities:
Your visit will consist of a 30-45 minute introduction to the shelter and tour and a volunteer session that includes approximately 2 hours of work on our dog walking path. Depending on need, volunteers will be working to bark dust our dog walking path, prune bushes, weed, remove debris and invasive species (like ivy, blackberry, thistle and scotch broom). Your help will provide a safe and dry dog walking area for our dogs and dog walking volunteers, keep our grounds looking beautiful and help us create a small sanctuary in North Portland for native plants and wildlife. Due to the nature of the work, all volunteers must be able to squat, stand, bend, lift and twist for long periods of time.

What to Wear:
For the safety reasons, all participants must wear long pants and non-slip, closed toed shoes (tennis shoes, boots, etc.) when volunteering at the shelter. Hanging jewelry is not allowed and facial piercing must be removed or covered with a band-aid. Those not dressed appropriately cannot participate. Grounds work can soil your clothing so please choose your attire accordingly. Many invasive plants have thorns so we advise bringing a shirt with long sleeves to the event to protect your arms.

All work materials including wheelbarrows, rakes, shovels and gloves will be provided, but we recommend that you bring your own gloves as they may be more comfortable for you. Please bring a water bottle and coat (if the weather is not good).

What NOT to Bring:
Please leave valuables at home or locked in the trunk of your car. This includes purses, MP3 players and cell phones. Unfortunately, we do not have a secure location to store valuables.

Project Requirements:

  • You must be 12 years of age or older to attend this project; any volunteer under age 18 must attend with a parent or adult chaperone.

  • Youth 12-17 years old must complete the “Youth Group Volunteer Waiver Form” ahead of time and bring it with them to the shelter. Click on the following link to download it:
    http://www.oregonhumane.org/volunteer/documents/Youth_Group_Waiver_2011.pdf

All volunteers under 18 are required to bring a Hands On Youth Volunteer Release Form signed by their parent or legal guardian. Please download, complete, and bring this waiver with you on the day of the project.

  • If you plan to bring children/additional volunteers you MUST reserve slots for them. The best way to do this is to create a Volunteer Team, then sign up your team for this project. Questions? Email teams@handsonportland.org

IMPORTANT NOTE: You are responsible for ensuring that everyone signed up through your team attends - only sign up team members who have confirmed their availability. Teams that repeatedly sign up, but do not show up or show up with fewer volunteers than they signed up, may be removed. To add or remove team members from a project: log in to your volunteer account and click "Manage My Team" next to the appropriate upcoming opportunity.
