On
January 21, 2008, we invite you to join us honoring Dr.
Martin Luther King’s vision of purposeful community
engagement. Join the United Way of the
Columbia-Willamette in community service projects
throughout the four-county Portland/Vancouver metro
area.
With
the help of Hands on Greater Portland, the United Way
has identified a wide variety of service projects
scheduled on MLK Day. Volunteer with
your friends, family, children or co-workers by engaging
in work focused on effective and lasting changes.

Cover Library Books at
Fort
Vancouver High School
One of our most
popular projects! Put covers on the most popular hard-back and paper-back
books, preserving them for use by students at this
multi-cultural school where more than 50 languages are
spoken. (Clark County)

Paint It Up At David's Harp
Socialization Center
David’s Harp is coming up on its 30th Anniversary as
Multnomah County’s oldest socialization center, serving
individuals living with mental illness by providing a warm
and supportive environment where members can achieve a
measure of personal autonomy and independence. In
preparation for its birthday, David's Harp Center is in need
of a major facelift! (Multnomah County)

Marshall SUN School Make
A Difference Day
Participate in
the spirit of Dr. King's legacy by creating a clean, safe
learning environment for the culturally and ethnically
diverse population of Marshall Campus. This is a student-led
school beautification project that will mobilize students
and community volunteers to clean up the front entrance to
the school. (Multnomah County)

Create A Craft with
Girl Scouts Beyond Bars
Volunteer
alongside a girl scout troop whose mothers are incarcerated
at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility. The program
provides girls an opportunity to visit their incarcerated
mothers weekly to monthly and take part in mother/daughter
Girl Scout troop meetings. On MLK Day, volunteers will work
with the girls to make MLK-themed art projects. (Multnomah

Violence Resource Center
Install a wood floor at the
DVRC, an agency that is empowering survivors
to get what they need when they need it. DVRC empowers all individuals and families to have
safe and healthy relationships. (Washington County)

Serve A Meal With
Loaves & Fishes At
Centro Cultural
Serve lunch at Centro with Loaves and Fishes,
which provides a nutritional and social lifeline for seniors
in this community. There will also be
opportunity to help with ESL classes. Centro
promotes social and economic
development, meets basic human and community needs, and
increases cultural consciousness and understanding among
diverse groups of the community. They provide education and
empowerment programs such as ESL, Spanish Literacy, Computer
Technology, Job training, Cultural Values, and a Hot

Build Comfort Supply
Kits for Troops From OR & WA
The Coalition of
Troop Support will be bringing "comfort" items to send to
our local troops, who often do not have access to these
products while serving in Iraq.
Volunteers will gather together to box donated items for
shipment. This is a working event, with people from all
walks of life getting together and sharing their time for
the benefit of the troops. *We ask that each volunteer bring
at least one item to donate for this event.

brother or sister . The "littles" are children who are

Edwards Center’s
gives people with disabilities the assistance they need to
live as independently as possible in non-institutional
settings. Paint the interior of one of their houses.

Fix Up the Black Parent
Initiative's New Home!
The
Black Parent Initiative has recently moved into donated
space in N.E. Portland and it needs a facelift. Help put a
little color on the walls to brighten up their offices and
meeting area! Volunteers will help spackle, rough up, and
finally paint the walls.

Build A Food Pantry
Shiloh Christian Center, in coordination with the Oregon
Food Bank, offers a local Food Bank every Friday to serve
the needs of residents in the New Columbia area of North
Portland. However, it needs a new shed to in which to store
donated food. If you have any carpentry skills, you are
especially welcome on this project, but no skill is

Create A Handprint Mural
With Youth At Hacienda CDC
Come help the Portland Ninos group of
youngsters and mothers liven up their
community center meeting space with a
mural of their handprints! The Portland
Niños program provides free nutrition,
dental hygiene, and home safety courses
for Hispanic mothers with children under
